The Public Compensation Coalition is working to support the principles of a fair and comprehensive workers‘ compensation system. That means defending and restoring balance to our public workers‘ compensation system. It‘s the best way to keep workers safe, and fairly supported and compensated in the unfortunate event of workplace injury or illness.

AND ENFORCEMENT

  1. WCB’s world-class rehabilitation clinic has been closed
  2. First aid services have been contracted out to for-profit companies
  3. The actual number of penalities imposed against employers has decreased despite an increased number of recommended penalities and increased enforcement
  4. Since 2001, regulations have been cut by 1/3, making workplaces less safe
  5. The injury rate for young workers is more than double that of the overall population
  6. Only 39 Loss of Earnings pensions were awarded in 2006, compared to 927 awarded in 2002
  7. Formerly, disabled workers received a pension for life; now they receive a one-time lump sum payout of 5 per cent of the total benefits they received
  8. Changes to the appeals process has made it much less accessible to injured workers
  9. The WCB is currently developing an automated claims adjudication program called the Claims Management System (CMS), budgeted to cost $65 million
  10. The two pieces of workers’ compensation legislation amended and passed in 2002 (Bills 63 & 49) gave employers one-time savings of nearly $1billion
